“God’s unfailing love for us is an objective fact affirmed over and over in the Scriptures. It is true whether we believe it or not. Our doubts do not destroy God’s love nor does our faith create it. It originates in the very nature of God who is love, and flows to us through our union with His beloved Son.”
Jerry Bridges
There are times when I am in awe as I reflect on “God’s Unfailing Love” because it appears so evident wherever I look. But
then I am drawn to me and my own life; and depending on where I am on my life journey, I begin to have doubts that His unfailing love includes me.
I was in a space of doubt many years ago when I attended a women’s conference and was reminded of Psalm 139. In these next few blogs on Soul Food for Sunday, I want to share part of the wisdom experience I have gained as I have come to a “heart” knowing of God’s Unfailing Love.
As much as the creation story in Genesis sparks awe in me of the greatness of God’s love, Psalm 139: 13-15a paints a more vivid picture of God’s awesome love.
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the darkness of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.”
Can you imagine the love behind those actions and words? I stand in awe and wonder of the magnitude of a love that is so powerful as to create life. We are invited into the creation process by the very fact that we are a child of God. a disciple and a follower of Christ Jesus.
Our challenge comes when we face life here in this world with all its complexity and many times the lack of respect for life and creation. But God calls us to love. Not as defined by this world, but as demonstrated through the life and death of His Son, Jesus. We are challenged to focus on God, to remember how precious each one of us are, how intricately and uniquely we are all made, in His likeness, through His love.
We are however not perfect and as people with ADD experience difficulty focusing, we also experience that in our faith journey. God is not as interested in how much head knowledge we possess as he is in our “Heart Knowing.” God created us to be in relationship with Him. Just as we long to have an intimate relationships with another person, so God longs for that relationship with us.
His love is “unfailing”, He knows we will struggle, He knows we will doubt, He knows our limitations and He continues to desire an intimate relationship with us. Psalm 139:23-24 is a perfect prayer to bring us back into focus on God, and our own heart’s desire for that relationship with God.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends You,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Our challenge is to move from what we know in our head about God, faith, and love and move to a “heart knowing” of “God’s Unfailing Love”. I pray today that you open your heart to that love and come to know His love in the depth of your being.
God is waiting for you!
Blessings,
Leanne the Urban Hermit
